Description

1971-S United States Mint proof set in the original government packaging

This year marks the introduction of the Eisenhower dollar, but they were not included with the proof sets. The resulting coins – a Kennedy half dollar, Washington quarter, Roosevelt dime, Jefferson nickel, and Lincoln cent had a total face value of 91 cents. The initial issue price of the sets was an affordable $5 each, and they were sent directly to collectors and dealers placing orders through the Mint’s fulfillment center.

The total mintage of 1971 proof sets was 3,220,733. This number was average with the era, meaning that there was no remarkable surge or drop in orders. For the first time, however, there was no silver at all in the set. The proof Kennedy half dollar was strictly cupro-nickel clad, as was the case with the quarters and dimes beginning in 1965. The 1970 half dollar had been a 40% silver clad composition. The Eisenhower dollar was offered in silver, but was sold separately from this set.
