The Austrian Mint
In 1194, England’s Richard the Lionheart paid 15 tonnes of silver to Duke Leopold VI of Austria. His cold, hard cash did more than secure his freedom from a year of incarceration – it laid the foundation for the Austrian Mint.
Today, the Austrian Mint is one of the world’s oldest and most respected minting facilities, operating for the past 800 years in its current location in central Vienna. It’s a global player in the international minting industry and ranks among the world’s leading Mints – the sole manufacturer of circulating coinage to the Austrian people since 1988, as well as striking some of the world’s best-selling precious metal bullion, collector coins and medals.
Owned by the Austrian Central Bank, the mint’s historic building in the center of Vienna occupies one of the most prestigious locations in the Austrian capital. But behind its classic facade lies a state-of-the-art production plant – where some 450 million coins are produced each year. Here, centuries of time-honored Viennese craftsmanship comes together with the world’s cutting-edge technology – for new coins created to match or surpass the best of their historic counterparts.
