Why Collect World Coins?
Although research can be challenging and overwhelming, contrary to popular belief that world coins don’t hold much value to collectors, world coins actually encompass a rather large area – the United States is not the only country that creates beautiful coins after all. From countless rarities and coin series for just about any interest, world coins allow informed collectors to cherrypick the world coins they want to collect, sometimes at a bargain!
Types of World Coins for Sale
Nearly every country has its own mint or, at the very least, its own means to mint coins for regular circulation and collecting purposes. Popular country issues like the U.S. American Eagle, Canada’s Maple Leaf, and the popular lunar and panda coins from China garner a lot of attention. However, due to the vastness of world coins, smaller countries that aren’t as well known have access to the larger mints to produce their own coins, representing their country’s history and joining the numismatic market. For example, the New Zealand Mint often strikes coins for Niue, and the Perth Mint often strikes coins for Tuvalu. In addition to sovereign mints, there are also a wide variety of international private mints that also strike stunning coins and medals.
Canadian Coins
If you’re looking for coins with beautiful and high quality designs, have a look through our Canadian Coins. The Royal Canadian Mint prides itself on its original quality designs and uses metal of the highest purity.
The Royal Canadian Mint produces excellent coins in terms of both designs and metal purity. The most well-known Canadian coin is the Silver Maple Leaf, which is made of .9999 fine silver. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is also popular, which is made of 24 karat gold. However, there is always a wide variety of new Canadian collector coins available each year.
South African Coins
While South African Coins are primarily of interest to bullion buyers, in recent years, the South African Mint has also been increasingly issuing collector coins. The South African Gold Krugerrand was one of the first gold bullion coins on the market, and it was very popular in the United States before the American Gold Eagle was available. The Krugerrand is still one of the world’s most well-known bullion coins and an excellent choice for anyone stacking gold. In 2017, the very first Silver Krugerrand was issued in a Premium Uncirculated finish, with both bullion Brilliant Uncirculated and collector’s Proof versions following in subsequent years.
Other series, such as the South African Big 5 I and II series, have also drawn collector interest.
Great Britain Coins
Great Britain’s Mint, The Royal Mint, is one of the world’s oldest, having been in operation for over 1,000 years. Many unique and original British Coins have been struck at The Royal Mint, and doubtless, many more will be struck in the years to come.
Coins From Great Britain are another modern favorite. The British Royal Mint is one of the oldest in the world, and today, they produce a number of impressive coins. While the Silver Britannia was originally created as a silver bullion coin, its often low mintage figures and changing design have made it a favorite among collectors. The British Royal Mint also produces fine gold coins in addition to silver, and many of their coins are available in multiple sizes. Since some of their coins are made in various sizes, more affordable options are often offered.
Australian Coins
Australian coins are produced at two primary mints, the Royal Australian Mint and the Perth Mint.
The Perth Mint is an older Mint in Australia with over a century of experience under minting Australian Coins under its belt. It is known for making quality silver bullion coins, as well as beautiful commemoratives that are desired by collectors all over the world. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a world coin collection that’s not largely composed of Australian coins.
Australian Coins are always a hit with collectors. Australia’s Perth Mint and Royal Australian Mint produce a number of fine bullion and collector products, and many of their coins are truly unique. Australian coins have great designs and may have other features such as color, gemstones, or ultra high-relief. All of these features and limited mintages make Australian coins an excellent choice to add to any collection. Australia is also well-known for its extremely popular series of Lunar designs, offering Australian Silver Lunar Coins and Australian Gold Lunar Coins. This series is very collectible and the designs each year follow the Chinese Zodiac.
Chinese Coins
Chinese Coins are known for their beautiful designs and finishes, even on regular bullion coins. The main product of the China Mint is the Silver Panda, which they issue every year with a brand new design. It’s one of the most popular coins in the world. Both the Gold Panda and Silver Panda series recently celebrated their 40th anniversary!
Chinese Coins have become extremely popular. The most widely collected Chinese coin is the Silver Panda and the Gold Panda. The Silver Panda is very collectible when it has been graded, and the ungraded coins are a great silver bullion option.
Austrian Coins
The Austrian Mint is actually one of the oldest in the world, and its history can be traced back for hundreds of years. Today, they make some of the world’s most popular coins, such as the Philharmonic bullion coin and the silver Maria Theresa Thaler.
Mexican Coins
Mexican Coins can have collectible appeal, but they make quality bullion coins as well. The Mexican bullion coin is the Mexican Gold Libertad. A number of both gold and silver coins come from Mexico. Some of the older Mexican gold coins that were made for circulation can be very affordable and a great way to start buying gold. Graded Libertads are a great option if you’re looking for something special to add to your collection.
Other World Coins
Other World Coins come from smaller countries that aren’t as well known, such as Niue, Tuvalu, and Tokelau. These countries may be newer to the coin market than others, but their coins are usually produced by larger Mints with an established reputation. For example, a number of coins from these countries are actually produced by Australia’s legendary Perth Mint.
