South African Silver Coins
While Gold Krugerrands are often seen as South Africa’s most sought-after bullion coin, South African Silver Coins, such as Silver Krugerrands and the Big 5 Series, offer collectors a great opportunity to expand their collection of world coins, often at a lower price point than their gold counterparts. The Silver Krugerrand is still relatively new to collectors since they were not minted until 2017, and South Africa’s Big 5 Series is even newer, having launched in 2019.
Silver Krugerrands
Silver Krugerrands were first struck in 2017 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Gold Krugerrand, first minted in 1967. The obverse design was appropriated from the 1892 South African Gold Pond Coin with a left-facing effigy of President Paul Kruger with the inscriptions “SUID AFRICA” and “SOUTH AFRICA.” The coin’s reverse showcases the springbok in mid-stride with the word “KRUGERRAND” arched across the top.
In 2018, the South African Mint made history by releasing the first-ever bullion Silver Krugerrand, struck in one full ounce of .999 fine silver with the coin’s original obverse and reverse designs.
Silver Big 5 Coin Series
In 2019, the South African Mint announced a new multi-year coin program, the Big Five Coin Progra, which would see fine silver coins highlighting South Africa’s infamous wildlife: the Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhinoceros, and the Buffalo. These South African silver coins consist of Brilliant Uncirculated coins struck from 999.9 fine silver as well as proof-quality versions.
The Big Five coins have since been structured into three different series (I, II, III), with 2019 launching the first series. The Big Five Series II subsequently started in 2021, and 2024 kicked off the Big Five Series III with all new designs of the iconic five animals.
ModernCoinMart is proud to offer annual releases of both Silver Krugerrands and the multi-year Big 5 coin program.
