The design of the medal is focused on a pair of vignettes which appeared on the U.S. 1899 $1 Silver Certificate. The note was dubbed the “Black Eagle” for its prominent eagle imagery on the front of the note. Positioned below the eagle, were the portrait vignettes of Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln. The Black Eagle is notably the only form of U.S. paper currency to ever depict two presidents on the same side.

Astoundingly Detailed Imagery
Obverse: An amazingly lifelike portrait of Ulysses S. Grant adorns the obverse, encircled by a symmetrical frame composed of curling parchment and branches of laurel. The design emulates the traditional appearance of portraiture on paper currency of the U.S. The name “GRANT” is boldly inscribed on a placard below.
Reverse: The reverse features a bald eagle with its wings majestically raised. The creature is depicted clutching a flagpole that is wrapped with the folds of the flag of the United States, while the distinctive form of the U.S. Capitol building dominates the background. The patriotic image is surrounded by a frame crafted from currency-style guilloche patterns and five-pointed stars.
