In the 1974 US Mint set, there are 3 Lincoln Cents, Two Jefferson Nickels, two Roosevelt Dimes, two Washington Quarters, two Kennedy Half Dollars, and two Eisenhower Dollars. The addition of the Eisenhower Dollars in 1973 had brought the total number of coins to thirteen and the face value up to $3.83. Each nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar have either the mint mark “P” or “D” which are the marks of the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, respectively. The three Lincoln Cents are from the Philadelphia mint and Denver mint, as well as the San Francisco mint which bears the mint mark “S.” Notably, 1974 was the last year that the San Francisco mint made coins for the uncirculated sets.
Something to note is that US mint uncirculated sets (such as this one) are different from US mint proof sets. Some of the main differences are as follows: uncirculated set coins are struck very closely to the same quality as circulated coins while proof sets are struck by polished dies on polished blanks. Also both sets have a coin from each denomination and design, but uncirculated sets have one from each mint they were made at during the year as well. This means that most uncirculated sets have at least two of each coin denomination.
This US Mint uncirculated coin set is GEM BU (the abbreviation for “brilliant uncirculated”) quality. GEM means that the coins do not show wear and BU means that they have retained their shine with at least 95% of the original luster from the Mint. However, soft tones of amber and blue are acceptable for coins in this classification. These terms are widely used by coin dealers to denote the quality of the coins being purchased.
The 1974 set is still in its original Mint packaging, which has been soft cellophane packets since 1959. One packet has red striping, the other has blue striping. These packets are placed between cardboard and then in an envelope that is labeled in the top left corner with “U.S. Mint” and “1974 Uncirculated Coin.”
