Powerful Britannia Design
Obverse: The obverse features a left-side portrait of King Charles III. Unlike most depictions of his predecessor, this one shows him without a crown. Inscriptions of his name and abbreviated title, “CHARLES III D G REX F D,” join inscriptions of the name of the issuing territory, “ST. HELENA,” the coin’s face value, “1 POUND,” and the date, “2023,” on the rim.
Reverse: The reverse design honors Queen Elizabeth II and harks back to an illustration from a 1901 edition of The Sphere magazine that commemorated the death of Elizabeth II’s great-grandmother, Queen Victoria. Britannia, wearing a Corinthian helmet and balancing her trident, holds her head down in mourning. To the left are the inscriptions “E II R” and “1926-2022,” the years of her life. Along the rim is a Latin inscription, “O SERVES ANIME DIMIDIUM MEAE” (Oh Servants of Half My Soul).
