Iconic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Obverse: Both faces of this coin bear designs by George T. Morgan. On the obverse is Liberty, who faces left, donning a Phrygian cap. Morgan’s choice of model, Anna Willess Williams, made history because the tradition up to the time of the original was to use a Greek-style model, not an American-style one, for the figure. The effigy is encircled by two inscriptions, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “2023,” and thirteen stars.
Reverse: An open wreath partially encircles an eagle, which holds arrows and an olive branch, on the reverse. Between the bird’s outstretched wings is an inscription of the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Along the rim are inscriptions of the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the coin’s face value, “ONE DOLLAR.” George T. Morgan was the seventh Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The Morgan Dollar was his most famous work.
