Why add the 2001-W Proof American Silver Eagle to your collection
Proof American Silver Eagles have been a favorite among modern silver coin collectors since their inception in 1986. They are one of the longest running series of proof silver coins currently available, and their one ounce .999 fine silver content is guaranteed and backed by the United States government.
This 2001-W Silver Eagle represents the first year that regular Proof Silver Eagle production moved from the Philadelphia mint to the mint at West Point, New York. One previous issue (1995-W) had been minted at West Point, but only because it was a part of a special set of American Gold Eagle proof coins, so it does not count as a regular issue – those were made at the Philadelphia Mint that year.
The design of this highly popular proof coin is both historic and beautiful. Mirroring the Walking Liberty half dollar, originally released in 1916, the Silver Eagle employs one of the most beautiful designs to grace a US coin. The reverse of the American Silver Eagle is equally as meaningful in that it uses the heraldic American Eagle in a different, yet similar form to the Great Seal of the United States – the symbol of America that has been used since the birth of the nation.
With a beautiful design represented in a very deep cameo appearance on a low mintage coin of a very highly popular pure silver coin series – where could you go wrong?
