This 2018-S American Innovation Washington-Signed First Patent Commemorative Clad Dollar Proof Coin was graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as a GEM Proof. It features the collectible Washington Label. This coin was produced at the famous San Francisco branch of the U.S. Mint. This first release in the American Innovations series celebrates the first U.S. patent issued to Samuel Hopkins. It was signed by President George Washington in 1790. The series will continue through 2032 with four releases per year noting innovations for 56 states and territories.
Reverses Celebrate American Innovations
The reverse design on this First Issue of the series coin shows George Washington’s signature as it appears on the first patent and gears which symbolize industry and innovation. The rim of the coin is incused with the year, mint mark, and motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The reverse was designed by artist Donna Weaver and engraved by Renata Gordon. The coin’s obverse depicts a 3/4 length profile of the Statue of Liberty which was designed by Justin Kunz and engraved by Phebe Hemphill.
