Description
Why purchase this Proof 1993-P American Silver Eagle?
This 1993-P Silver Eagle comes from the first issue of Proof Silver Eagles to be struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Its “P” mint mark makes it easily distinguishable from the bullion version of the coin. Both mintage and quality dropped from the previous year, which makes this piece, which comes in its original government packaging, particularly attractive. Part of a mintage of 405,913 pieces, this coin was struck from .7734 troy oz of .900 fine silver.
Featuring the Historic Walking Liberty Design of Adolph Weinman
Adolph Weinman’s famous Walking Liberty design, which first appeared on the half dollar, features on the obverse. Draped in the American flag, Liberty strides confidently to the left side of this face. She wears a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave, on her head. She extends her right hand in front of her above the morning sun, as if presenting the new day to the holder. In her left arm, she carries laurel branches, symbols of honors bestowed upon civilians, and oak branches, which represent honors bestowed upon civilians. Obverse inscriptions read, “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1993.”
On the reverse, an eagle guards a union shield under a triangular arrangement of thirteen stars. John Mercanti adapted the image from the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, symbols of America’s willingness to defend her values and preference for peace. The bird also holds a ribbon in its beak. The ribbon bears the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Three sets of rim inscriptions encircle the image. They include the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the coin’s weight, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and the face value, “ONE DOLLAR.”
