1989-S Proof American Silver Eagle
The first few years of the American Silver Eagle saw production of these very popular collector coins at the San Francisco Mint in California. Only the first seven issues were minted at this facility, then production was moved to Philadelphia.
Early Silver Eagles – especially those minted in San Francisco – have a slightly different appearance from those minted later, and are especially favorable to collectors who like the deeper appearance of their design. They are also lower mintage pieces than more recent issues, making them harder to find on the marketplace, especially with the original mint packaging and certificate of authenticity that these come with.
American Silver Eagles have been one of the most popular modern coin issues since their beginning in 1986. They are widely popular and have a beautiful ‘classic’ looking design, thanks in part to the design being borrowed from the Walking Liberty half dollar, which began circulating in 1916. Collectors who buy the Proof Silver Eagle wait every year for them to come available, and once orders are complete, the mint does not make more of them, which limits their production to current demand for that year.
