Description

Why add this Silver 1921 Morgan Dollar to your collection?

The beloved Morgan Silver Dollar has a unique place in American history. It helped a country to heal and form its own united identity. The original run of Morgans ended in 1904, but a single run with different dies was struck in 1921. Because of the new dies, these Morgans look different than previous editions. This piece was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. It comes from a mintage of 44,690,000 pieces and remains in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

Patriotic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

Both faces of this coin bear designs of George T. Morgan. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. Using Anna Willess Williams as his model, Morgan broke with the long-standing tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure, instead showing her as an American-style figure. She wears a ribbon, a crown, and a Phrygian cap. The ribbon bears an inscription of her name, “LIBERTY.” The crown is a symbol of unity, as it is made from cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. The cap is traditionally worn by freed slaves. Along the rim are the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” the date, “1921,” and thirteen stars, which represent the original states.

An eagle holds arrows and an olive branch while spreading its wings on the reverse. The arrows represent America’s willingness to defend itself, while the olive branch expresses a desire for peace. An open wreath partially encircles this image. The national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” is inscribed between the eagle’s wings. Rim inscriptions offer the name of the issuing country, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the face value of the coin, “ONE DOLLAR.”
