Description

1921 Morgan Silver Dollar $1 – AU

The 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar is an interesting piece in part because it is the only year after 1904, the last of the original run, in which the coin was minted. This American classic consists of .9000 silver, with the balance of the coin being copper. The original coin weighed 26.73 g, with an actual silver weight of .7734 Troy oz. While the coin may have lost some of its original luster and have a few minor circulation flaws, it remains in very nice overall condition.

Design of the 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar

The obverse of the 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar features the design of George T. Morgan, from whom the coin gets its name. He depicted Lady Liberty as an American, using Anna Willess Williams as a model. Liberty is depicted with a Phrygian cap, and her curly hair drops down the back of her neck. In her hair, she wears a ribbon on which her name, “LIBERTY,” is inscribed. The motto from the Great Seal of the United States, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” arches over her head. Thirteen stars, seven on the left and six on the right, continue down the rim of the coin to the bottom, where the year of mintage, “1921,” is inscribed.

On the reverse is an eagle that holds two important symbols, an olive branch for peace and arrows, a symbol of America’s willingness to fight for her values, in its talons. Its head faces to the left side of the coin, and its wings spread upward, creating a V-shape. Between its wings are the words of the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” A laurel wreath extends upward from under the eagle to the wings. The inscription at the top, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” is interrupted by the wings, and the face value, “ONE DOLLAR,” is noted at the bottom.
