ModernCoinMart (MCM) has a selection of PCGS and NGC certified coins with John Mercanti signed coin labels available for sale. What is the significance of these hand-signed labels? How do collectors stand to benefit from these?

The collecting of autographs – signed photographs, documents, books, letters, manuscripts, and notes – is nothing new. For quite some time, collecting autographs has been a satisfying pastime for many, especially in a world that is increasingly leaning towards electronic communication.

The satisfaction of holding a piece of history in hand, quite literally, is part of what makes the collecting of autographs so rewarding. The same could be set in terms of the collecting of coins – pieces of history – of which coin collectors are ultimately the preservers and curators.

The mentioned pastimes have merged, to some extent, into autographed coin labels, leaving a rather powerful combination that is welcomed by many collectors.

Adding further attractiveness of autographed coin labels, or more formally – autographed coin certification labels – is that both coins and autographs are preserved in a mutually beneficial manner. E.g. the autograph or signature on a coin label doesn’t alter the physical appearance of the associated coin or interfere with the grade and/or condition of the coin (and vice versa).

Both have standalone value but offers additional value when combined in a non-intrusive physical manner. This is especially true when a label is hand-signed by a person with a solid connection to the associated coin. When a coin label is hand-signed by the designer of the coin in question, a more solid connection exists. The market tends to pay a premium for this, although it is not always the case.

In a huge step forward, the famous creator of the heraldic eagle reverse design of the American Silver Eagle bullion coin – American sculptor and engraver John M. Mercanti – signed exclusive label deals with both NGC and PCGS. First with PCGS and recently with NGC – both highly respected and reputable third party coin grading services.

The now retired Mercanti – known in numismatic circles as the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint – committed himself to individually hand sign coin certification labels. This happened to the delight of a multitude of collectors, both locally and abroad. Not surprisingly, considering that Mercanti is deemed the most notable U.S. coin engraver of our time – no other employee in the history of the U.S. Mint produced as many coin and medal designs as he did.

Even better, Mercanti was commissioned to create the reverse design of the first-ever Australian silver eagle dollar – the 2014 Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle coin. This silver eagle dollar, the first issued in the Perth Mint’s young and exciting Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle Series, was relatively well received in the marketplace. More and more collectors have since then become aware of the existence of these impressive Australian silver eagle dollars.

Mercanti was also commissioned to create the reverse design of the 2016 Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle coin. The Mercanti connection certainly adds value, both in a monetary and artistic sense – bringing joy to a multitude of collectors.

Many of those collectors will be happy to know that MCM currently offers some of these Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle and other Mercanti signed labeled coins for sale.
