When a coin label is hand-signed by the designer of the coin in question, a more solid connection exists. The market tends to pay a premium for this, although it is not always the case.
John Mercanti Signed Coin Labels – Exclusive Label Deals – NGC and PCGS
In a huge step forward, the famous creator of the heraldic eagle reverse design of the American Silver Eagle bullion coin – American sculptor and engraver John M. Mercanti – signed exclusive label deals with both NGC and PCGS. First with PCGS and recently with NGC – both highly respected and reputable third-party coin grading services. The now retired Mercanti – known in numismatic circles as the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint – committed himself to individually hand sign coin certification labels. This happened to the delight of a multitude of collectors, both locally and abroad. Not surprisingly, considering that Mercanti is deemed the most notable U.S. coin engraver of our time – no other employee in the history of the U.S. Mint produced as many coin and medal designs as he did.
Even better, Mercanti was commissioned to create the reverse design of the first-ever Australian silver eagle dollar – the 2014 Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle coin. This silver eagle dollar, the first issued in the Perth Mint’s young and exciting Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle Series, was relatively well received in the marketplace. Since then, more collectors have become aware of these impressive Australian silver eagle dollars. Mercanti was also commissioned to create the reverse design of the 2016 Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle coin. The Mercanti connection certainly adds value, both in a monetary and artistic sense – bringing joy to a multitude of collectors.
