Africa’s newest silver bullion coin has been 50 years in the making. Take a look at the iconic Krugerrand design struck in .999 silver for the very first time!
2017 Silver Krugerrands
50 years of production is an achievement that no other modern gold bullion coin has ever obtained. In honor of this, the SAM has recently announced that they would be producing a Silver Krugerrand, dated 2017! For a coin that has only been seen struck in fine gold for half a century, this is an incredible switch-up.
These silver coins will be struck out of 1 oz. of .999 fine silver over a diameter of 38.725mm. Unlike what many collectors have suspected so far, these coins will be released with a unique collector’s finish dubbed by the South African Mint “Premium Uncirculated.” Similar to the specimen finish from the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) or U.S. Mint, this Premium Uncirculated finish allows the first silver coins struck with the iconic Krugerrand design to be minted to the highest possible standards.
The design will mirror the Gold Krugerrand with two small changes. The first and most obvious change is the alteration of the traditional English and Afrikaans inscription “FYNGOUD 1 OZ FINE GOLD” to “FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER.” The second is a small privy mark that will be struck onto these 2017 Silver Krugerrands. Found directly above the springbok on the reverse, this mark is “50” inside of a circle of tiny script reading “1967-2017 ANNIVERSARY.” Finally, it is the first Krugerrand to show its legal tender value with the additional inscription, “R1.”
