Description
The Morgan Silver Dollar
The Morgan Silver Dollar remains a very collected coin in the world of American Numismatics. The Morgan Silver Dollar coin boasts a beautiful design on both the front and back of the coin, and was engraved during the heart of the ‘Golden Age’ for United States minted coins. The Morgan Dollar is the creation of Assistant Engraver to the United States Mint, Mr. George T. Morgan of Staffordshire, England. Mr. Morgan began work on this iconic design late in 1877, and prepared dies that would begin minting coins by March of 1878.
Mr. Morgan sought to bring forth a distinctly American depiction of Lady Liberty for his next coin and would use the services of Philadelphia model, Anna Willes Williams, to be his inspiration. The obverse design of the Morgan Dollar uses the adaption of this model by Mr. Morgan to create a wonder sculpting of Lady Liberty as she faces left in profile. Upon the head of Lady Liberty is a Greek-style cap with the word ‘LIBERTY’ set into the headband, immediately accented by several small leaves and branches as they protrude from just behind the motto. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies of America encircle the lower portion of the coin, while the legend ‘E PLURIBUS UNUM’ can be located on the upper half of the coin completing the circle. The reverse of the coin carries a magnificent image of an American eagle as it holds its wings outstretched and clutching arrows and a branch in its talons. Each Morgan Silver Dollar has a diameter of 38.1 millimeters and a standard weight of 26.73 g, giving this large coin almost three-quarters of an ounce of solid silver, or .77344 oz. of actual silver weight.
