In 2021, the Mint modified the design of the coin for the first time ever, by enhancing the design elements of the historic obverse rendition of Lady Liberty, and replacing the classic Type-1 heraldic eagle reverse with a lifelike interpretation of the national bird preparing to land (Type-2).

Magnificently Detailed Silver Eagle Design
Obverse: Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse walking towards the rising sun, while draped in an American flag. Inscribed “LIBERTY,” “2023,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the artist’s monogram “AW.” The image is borrowed from the iconic 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar designed by acclaimed medallic sculptor Adolph A. Weinman.
Reverse: The reverse features a stunning eagle in flight, with its wings lifted in preparation for landing. In its talons, the creature clutches an oak branch intended for its nest. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “W” and “ONE DOLLAR.” The image is credited to award-winning illustrator Emily Damstra, a member of the U.S. Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program since 2014.
