Description

Why add this magnificently minted Brilliant Uncirculated 2023 Canada 1 oz. Silver Maple Leaf coin to your collection?

The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) launched the Silver Maple Leaf series as the official silver bullion coin of Canada in 1988. The coin’s nationally themed imagery emulates the design originally created for the Gold Maple Leaf series in 1979. While the RCM has not yet made a statement, it is very likely that 2023 will be the last year that Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will appear on Maple Leaf coinage. A transitional obverse, Susanna Blunt’s classic effigy that has been used on the series since 2003, has been updated to include the dates of her long reign, “1952-2022.” This effigy will be used until Buckingham Palace approves the Canadian effigy of King Charles III. Whether this will occur later in 2023, or in 2024, remains unknown.

  • This 2023 Maple Leaf coin is struck from 1 Troy oz. of .9999 fine silver.
  • The bullion coin measures 37.97 mm in diameter.
  • The coin is minted with a breathtaking Brilliant Uncirculated finish.
  • The coin has been treated with the RCM’s innovative MintShield™ coating, which has been proven to significantly reduce the development white spots on the surface.
  • The coin features a maple leaf security mark and fields patterned with microscopically thin radial lines to discourage counterfeiting.
  • The coin carries a legal tender value of five dollars in Canada.

Classic National Symbol of Canada

Obverse: The obverse is graced with a right facing effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The finely textured background contains the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “5 DOLLARS” and “2023.” The likeness of the monarch, designed by award-winning Canadian portrait artist Susanna Blunt, has appeared on the coinage of Canada since 2003. The 2023 obverse is being called a transitional obverse as following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September of 2022, the dates of her long reign, “1952-2022” have been included to the left of her profile.

Reverse: The reverse is adorned with a beautifully detailed single sugar maple leaf, an emblem synonymous with Canada. A small maple leaf security mark is positioned to the right of the leaf’s stem, which is micro-engraved with the coin’s two digit date of issue “23.” Inscriptions include “CANADA,” “FINE SILVER 1 OZ. ARGENT PUR” and the coin’s purity “9999” on each side of the leaf. The timeless maple leaf design is an example of the artistry of the late Walter Ott (1920-2020), the RCM’s Chief Engraver and Director of Art from 1977-1985.
