Design of this 2006-W Proof Silver Eagle
This obverse of this 2006-W Proof Silver Eagle is a modification of the original 1916 Walking Liberty design of Adolph Weinman. The goddess Liberty strides forward toward the left side of the coin. She extends her right arm with her palm open and her elbow bent. In her left hand are olive branches, which run up to her shoulder. Her left leg extends behind her, with her foot positioned vertically, about to leave the ground. To her lower left, the sun sets on the horizon. Its rays extend upward and outward. Along the rim of the coin, the name of the goddess, “LIBERTY,” is inscribed. At the bottom is a horizontal inscription of the year of mintage, 2006. Behind Liberty’s leg is the inscription of America’s national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
On the reverse, an eagle spreads its wings around the shield that it guards. Thirteen five-pointed stars form a triangle above its head. In one talon, the eagle holds an olive branch, the symbol of peace, while in the other it holds arrows, which represent a willingness to fight for the values that the nation holds dear. In the eagle’s mouth is a ribbon that bears the motto from the Great Seal of the United States, “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” To the left of the eagle is a “W,” a mint mark that indicates that the coin was struck at West Point. On the opposite side is a small inscription of the letters, “JM,” which stand for John Mercanti, the designer of the reverse. Two sets of inscriptions run along the rim of the coin. At the top, the country in which this coin is legal tender is identified with the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” Along the rim on the bottom half of the coin are its metal content and face value. That inscription reads, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR.”
