2004-W Proof American Silver Eagle
The 2004-W Proof Silver Eagle represents one of a number of issues minted at the West Point mint, the one facility of the United States Mint best known for Eagle production, especially the proof issues. These coins are very nice, high quality examples of the very popular Proof Silver Eagle set run, and were minted to order, which means after they stopped receiving orders, they stopped making coins.
Through the history of the Proof Silver Eagle series, mintage figures ranged from over 1.4 million pieces to just under 400,000 pieces. That makes this issue’s mintage somewhere around the middle of mintage so far as these coins go, but even at that it is a far cry from the 8.8 million bullion strike Silver Eagles minted in the same year.
Collectors recognize these far lower mintage figures and buy proofs in speculation that the lower mintage figures will add up to higher values in the future. While we cannot say one way or the other for sure, that sure seems to be good logic. With the entire series being barely 30 years old, it is hard to tell what will come of them into the future, but buying lower mintage coins usually secures the value of coins over the long haul, and if demand exceeds the limited supply, values go up.
