1997-P Proof American Silver Eagle
1997 is in the middle of a five year era in Proof Silver Eagle production where mintage figures are below a half million coins. As it might seem this number is still large for a modern proof coin, consider that mintage figures have since climbed well over one million coins, and Silver Eagles are among the most recognizable and highest demand modern silver coin issues in the world. At under a half million made, the demand for these coins far exceeds the supply regularly.
American Silver Eagles are among the most beautiful coins struck today. They borrow from the Adolph Weinman ‘Walking Liberty’ design originally created for the half dollar in 1916. The design celebrates the end of the Great War (World War I), with a peaceful design of Miss Liberty draped in the United States flag walking toward the sunrise – a sign of hope for the future. She carries a bough of olive leaves signifying peace.
The reverse design is a newer work of art created from a theme that dates back to the origin of the United States. It’s a heraldic eagle protected by a shield, clutching a twig of plive in one talon and arrows in the other – as a sign of peace, yet always prepared for war. The design was executed by the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, Mr. John M. Mercanti.
