Obverse: The obverse is graced with an image of Lady Liberty wrapped in an American flag, as she strolls towards the rising sun while carrying a bouquet of oak and laurel branches. Inscribed “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “1991.” This interpretation of Lady Liberty was initially created for the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar by renowned medallic sculptor Adolph A. Weinman.
Reverse: The reverse features an eagle grasping an olive branch and arrows, accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the San Francisco Mint’s “S” Mint mark. This heraldic eagle design, which showcases the artistry of currently retired 12th U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, is the defining element of the Type-1 Silver Eagle. The image was struck on all releases of the series from 1986 until mid-2021.
