Description

1989-S U.S. Mint Proof Coin Set

Proof coins are struck with special blanks and dyes. That along with being struck at least twice produces crisp clear images that are very eye-catching. The U.S. Mint began to put together these sets beginning in 1936 and are composed of the different denominations that were in circulation for that specific year. Typically they include the penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and the half dollar. From 1973-81 the dollar was added, but then removed in 1982. For special occasions there have also been other temporary additions to the sets.

This GEM Proof set from 1989 contains the Lincoln Penny, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and the Kennedy Half Dollar. They were all minted at the San Francisco Mint and each has the “S” Mint mark. Each set also comes in the original government packaging. In the beginning the packaging was a small cardboard box with the coins in cellophane packages. That was changed in 1955 to being a flat, clear cellophane holder, referred to as “flat packs.” What you see as the 1989 packaging is a rigid plastic holder and first appeared in 1968. It has also gone through minor design changes over the years.

The demand for these Mint Proof sets was and is very high and it continues to be the U.S. Mints longest running series of coins. Several reasons why these sets are so popular with the public is that they can serve many different purposes. There are sets for almost every year so they make perfect gifts or personal memorials for special events such as marriages or birthdays. It can also be an exciting hobby to track down a set for each year they were produced or they can be an great way to begin a coin collection.
