Description

1977-S US Proof Set

While many of us today take the availability of United States Mint proof sets for granted, they weren’t always produced or made in such high quantities. Proof coins have been produced by the Mint at various times since the mid-1800s. However, the first proof set was not sold until 1936. The proof set offered here is from 1977 and was struck at the San Francisco Mint. This set includes an Eisenhower dollar, Kennedy half, Washington quarter, Jefferson nickel, Roosevelt dime, and a Lincoln cent.

1977-S Proof Set Packaging

The 1977 S proof set comes with its original packaging. This product was not purchased directly from the Mint. While we do our best to preserve all coins and their original packaging, there may be some imperfections. The packaging of each of these sets may or may not be perfect, but the coins are in GEM proof condition. Some of the natural aging processes that can occur may be visible, but that is normal.

1977 Proof Coin Composition

By 1977, the United States Mint was no longer producing silver coins for circulation. All of the coins in this set have the same composition as those that were produced for circulation.

Contents of the 1977 San Francisco Proof Set

The largest coin in this set is the Eisenhower dollar. This coin never really caught on for daily use, partially because of its size. The obverse shows President Eisenhower. This side of the coin reads “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1977.” The reverse of the 1977 proof Eisenhower dollar shows a bald eagle on the surface on the moon. Earth can be seen in the distance behind the eagle. The inscriptions here read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

The 1977 S Kennedy half dollar is the next largest coin in the 1977-S proof set. The inscriptions on the front side are the same as those found on the Eisenhower dollar. This coin displays President Kennedy on the front and was designed shortly after his assassination. The reverse of this coin has a heraldic eagle design that is similar to the presidential seal. The banner in the eagle’s mouth reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The rest of the inscriptions on the reverse are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “HALF DOLLAR.”

The next coin in this set is the Washington quarter, depicting none other than our nation’s first president. The inscriptions on the front and back are the same as those on the dollar and half dollar with the exception of the denomination. The reverse of this coin shows a perched bald eagle.

Going by denomination, the next coin is the Roosevelt dime. The reverse of this coin shows a torch, olive branch, and oak branch.

The 1977 Jefferson nickel should look familiar. The inscriptions on both sides are the same as the other coins, other than the value and with the addition of the word “MONTICELLO” on the reverse below the depiction of it.

Finally, the Lincoln cent shows President Abraham Lincoln on the front and the Lincoln Memorial on the back.

This 1977 US proof set is a great buy for newer collectors, it’s very affordable and provides some very nice looking coins.
