Description

1961 United States Mint Uncirculated Set

Containing a Franklin half dollar, Washington quarter, Roosevelt dime, Jefferson nickel, and Lincoln cent for each of two mints – Denver and Philadelphia – this set is composed of 10 coins with a face value of $1.82 and contains 1.22974 ounces of 90% coin silver (adding together all the coins except the nickels and cents).

1961 mint sets are less common than in the previous two years because orders from the mint had declined. The coins within the sets are usually very bright and grade well, and through years of storage in the original cardboard holders, often gain color known as ‘toning’ which collectors tend to find desirable.

The original issue price of this set in 1961 was $2.40, a slight premium over face value which many collectors found to be unrealistic at the time considering all of the coins were relatively easy to find in nice condition from circulating coins. Of course this is no longer the case, and these sets provide the easiest and best method of collecting these coins today.
