World’s First-Ever Wedge-Tailed Eagle High Relief Incuse Proof
For 2020’s one-year-only design, Mercanti gives us an incredibly intricate, close-up look at Australia’s largest bird of prey as it prepares to dive for its next meal. It may be Mercanti’s finest Wedge-Tailed Eagle to date, which makes it the design to strike as the first-ever Wedge-Tailed Eagle High Relief Incuse Proof.
For the first time ever, the beautiful eagle design has been struck below the surface of the coin rather than above it. To create the design in High Relief, the mint used a bowl-shaped planchet, with the reverse given a convex shape to allow the design to sink even further into the coin’s surface. This side of the coin also comes in Reverse Proof condition, meaning the eagle design features a shimmering mirrored finish while the field is given a frosty appearance. The Queen Elizabeth II concave obverse has been produced in High Relief Proof condition. It’s unlike any Wedge-Tailed Eagle you’ve seen before!
Struck in Five Ounces of Gold or Silver
This first-ever High Relief Incuse Wedge-Tailed Eagle can be yours struck in five full ounces of either 99.99% pure gold or 99.99% fine silver. Each coin is official Australia legal-tender, with values of $8 and $500, respectively. Collectors often prefer legal-tender coins for their government-backed weight, purity and legal-tender value.
Certified Flawless and FDI
When these coins were issued, we immediately sent them off to Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the world’s top third-party grading services, for grading and certification. The coins we’re offering here are have been graded as perfect Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC) condition—flawless even under magnification!
In addition, both coins have been certified as First Day of Issue (FDI)—a designation highly coveted by those seeking out the freshest coins possible. FDI coins are certified as having been received for grading within the first 24 hours of the mintage’s release.
