The Top 10 Most Valuable Coins Worldwide

Coin collecting is a hobby and pastime for most people, but for some, collecting is an investment and an opportunity to preserve pieces of history. Far and above their face value, the right coins can cost buyers several million dollars. Discover the top 10 most valuable coins across history and nations, and what makes these rare coins just so expensive for buyers to get their hands on.

The Million Dollar Difference

There is no secret formula that guarantees a coin will be worth millions. However, you’ll find a series of common factors in most of the valuable coins on this list.

  • Scarcity – One of the biggest factors that almost every coin on this list shares is scarcity. Whether due to low mintage, an unusual mistake, or the majority being lost to history, rare coins tend to be valued higher. Some of the coins on this list are the only ones known in existence, while others are one of a very select few.
  • Condition – The quality of preservation is important as well in determining how valuable coins are. Coins with minimal wear and tear will naturally command a higher price. Condition is the most easily measurable factor on the list, with a 70-point Sheldon Scale used for universal grading.
  • Age – While older does not inherently equal higher value, it can certainly help. In particular, coins with more perceived historical impact are often worth more.
