This silver bullion coin from Samoa features an eagle reverse design created by the numismatic legend John Mercanti. Mercanti was the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint and one of their most prolific coin designers. He is perhaps most well known for designing the Type 1 Heraldic Eagle reverse that appeared on the Silver Eagle series from 1986 through mid-2021. The reverse design of this bullion coin features a rendition of what John Mercanti had envisioned to be used for the Type-2 American Silver Eagle reverse had he been tasked to do so.

Stunning Eagle Design by John Mercanti
Obverse: The Samoan coat of arms, which was inspired by the United Nations badge, features on the obverse. Superimposed on the badge are a shield, a Cross, and a ribbon that bears motto that translates to “God be the Foundation of Samoa.” Inscriptions on this face note the issuing country’s name, “SAMOA,” the coin’s weight and purity, “1 OZ AG 999,” and its face value, “2 DOLLARS.”
Reverse: The reverse design, which was created by John Mercanti, features an eagle in flight with its wings spread as the morning sun emerges from beyond the horizon. Arching over the bird is the inscription “LIBERTY.” At the bottom of this face are inscriptions of the date, “2023,” and the national motto of the United States, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” John Mercanti was the twelfth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. He is the most prolific numismatic designer in American history.
