Featuring John Mercanti’s Patriotic Great Seal Design
Obverse: The obverse design comes from the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which was designed by Adolph Weinman. Liberty carries laurel and oak branches in the morning sun while draped in the American flag. Her name, “LIBERTY,” is inscribed above, while the date, “2021,” and national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” are also included on this face. Adolph Weinman contributed the Mercury Dime and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar to America’s early 20th century numismatic renaissance. He also made other numismatic contributions and created numerous sculptures, some of which continue to be displayed in a variety of American cities.
Reverse: The reverse design was modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States by John Mercanti. An eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, symbols of readiness for war and peace, as it protects a union shield under thirteen stars, which represent the country’s original states. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is inscribed on the top half of the rim, while “1 OZ. FINE SILVER” and “ONE DOLLAR” are inscribed on the bottom half. John Mercanti was the twelfth Chief Engraver of the US Mint, a post he held for just part of his nearly four decades with the institution. He remains the most prolific designer of coins and medals in the mint’s history.
