Historic Gold Buffalo Design
Obverse: Centered on the obverse is a portrait of a Native American Chief, contrasted against a hammered mirrored background. Inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” “2008,” the Mint mark “W” and the single initial “F” to credit Fraser for the design.
Reverse: The reverse depicts an American Buffalo named Black Diamond in a standing pose. The majestic creature was a resident of the New York City Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s. The image is surrounded by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” with “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD” and the coin’s “$50” denomination engraved into the flattened earth beneath the buffalo’s hooves.
