Description
2005-W Proof American Silver Eagle
The 2005-W Proof American Silver Eagle is known for its superior quality and strong strike, and is one of the few issues minted at the West Point Mint – a facility that specializes in the minting of American Eagle coins and other Proof quality modern era coins such as the Buffalo Gold coins and the First Spouse gold coins.
With a mintage under one million coins, the 2005-W Proof Silver Eagle shares a common theme with other proof Silver Eagles minted in West Point – a relatively low mintage that was controlled by the number of orders within that year for coins. They stopped minting coins when the orders stopped, and they did not mint any more.
The American Silver Eagle is one of the most recognized and most beautiful modern silver coins minted. Made from one full troy ounce of .999 fine silver, the Proof American Silver Eagle is special in that it’s metal content is guaranteed and backed by the United States government. Its design is superior in that it takes one of the most popular classic designs on United States coinage and repeats it with precision. Originally conceived by artist Adolph A. Weinman in 1916, the design of the Silver Eagle is that of Miss Liberty walking toward the sunrise with a bough of olive twigs in her hand. She represents hope for the future and peace in this beautiful design.
The reverse design of this coin portrays a heraldic eagle protected by a shield, carrying an olive twig in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left talon. This is meant to signify the hope for peace and preparedness for war. There are thirteen stars above the eagle – one for each of the thirteen original states of the United States.
