Description
2003-S United States Mint Silver Proof Set in GEM Proof – with the original Mint box
For the first time since the first special silver proof sets were minted in 1992, this year’s silver Proof set mintage exceeded one-million at 1,125,755. Even that didn’t completely quell the collector thirst for the sets, as their predecessors gained value as the statehood quarter series became more popular with collectors and albums were issued with slots for the special 90% silver coins.
The dime, quarters and half dollar in this set are all made of 90% coin silver, meaning they have the same metal composition and weight as the pre-1965 coins that preceded them. The Lincoln Cent, Jefferson nickel, and the Sacagawea dollar coin are all of standard non-silver composition.
Special for this set are the five different 2003 issue Statehood quarters representing Illinois, Alabama, Maine, Missouri, and Arkansas.
All of the coins in this set bear the “S” Mint mark of San Francisco, and are made with specially treated dies that are highly polished, then frosted on the design elements to give the resulting coins a beautiful ‘cameo’ effect.
