Beautifully Rendered Imagery

Obverse: The platinum inset of the obverse illustrates the hand of Minerva (Roman goddess of wisdom) grasping the torch of learning beside the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST,” with the Library of Congress Jefferson Building dome appearing in the background. The gold ring contains the flame of the torch, along with the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “2000,” and “LIBRARY OF CONGRESS.” The image was created by John Mercanti, the currently retired 12th U.S. Mint Chief Engraver.

Reverse: On the reverse, the platinum center features the official seal of the Library of Congress, a stylized heraldic eagle. The emblem is flanked by branches of laurel, with the West Point Mint mark “W” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” inscribed below. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TEN DOLLARS” are inscribed on the gold border. The design is the work of Thomas D. Rogers, a U.S. Mint sculptor/engraver from 1991 until his retirement in 2001.
