Why purchase this United States 1863 Army & Navy Civil War Token in Story Vault Holder?
This American 1863 Army & Navy Civil War Token is a patriotic token with a pro-Union message. Like other tokens fro the era, it was struck and widely used as part of a private effort to work around the dearth of government issued pennies.
Stunning patriotic designs
Liberty is depicted in left-side profile on the obverse of the coin. Her long hair falls down over the back of her neck, and her chin juts out slightly. A Phrygian cap, which has long been a symbol of freedom, covers the top of her head. Thirteen stars, which symbolize the original states and, by extension, the continuity of the nation, combine with the date, “1863,” to encircle the image.
On the reverse is another pro-Union design. “ARMY & NAVY” is inscribed at the center. Along the rim is a wreath that is made from wheat and cotton, a northern crop and a southern crop. At the bottom of the rim are two swords, which cross under a ribbon.
