Morgan Silver Dollars and Peace Silver Dollars are two storied treasures in the realm of numismatics, each with a rich history and magnetic allure that captivates collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. Minted first in 1878, Morgan Silver Dollars were a reflection of the thriving silver industry in the western United States, exuding an air of the untamed frontier in their design. Peace Silver Dollars, first issued in 1921 to commemorate the end of World War I, encapsulate an era of renewed hope and tranquility, their design symbolizing peace. These silver dollars are not just mere coins but tangible pieces of history, representative of diverse epochs in American history. Their intricate designs, varying degrees of rarity, and the historical significance they carry have secured their enduring appeal to numismatists, making them cherished milestones in the fascinating journey of coin collecting.

The United States Mint revived both series in 2021, marking the 100th anniversary of the last Morgan Dollar and the first Peace Dollar. While initially collectors were expecting the modern Morgan and Peace dollars to again be issued in 2022, due to a shortage of silver blanks which are needed to strike the coins, none were released in 2022. Now, in 2023, the United States Mint is again releasing new Morgan and Peace Dollars, offering collectors another chance to add these historic designs crafted with modern minting expertise to their collections.

Will There Be a 2023 Morgan Silver Dollar?

Yes! Since the 2021 release of Morgan Silver Dollars, demand for these historic coins has remained high, especially since there were no new Morgan Silver Dollars released in 2022 due to a shortage of silver blanks. However, new Morgan Silver Dollars were released by the United States Mint for 2023 starting on July 13, 2023, with the Uncirculated 2023-(P) Morgan Silver Dollar. On August 9, 2023, the U.S. Mint released proof versions of the 2023 Morgan Dollar. A 2-Coin Morgan and Peace Dollar Reverse Proof set was released on November 9, 2023, which contains the first Morgan Dollar ever struck with a reverse proof finish.

History of the Morgan Silver Dollar

The Morgan Silver Dollar, an iconic coin in American history, has a storied past intricately tied to the country’s economic evolution. Minted for the first time in 1878, the production continued up until 1904 and was briefly revived in 1921. This historical coin owes its existence to the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase between two and four million dollars worth of silver each month from the western mines. Consequently, hundreds of millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were minted, in effect, embodying the flourishing American silver industry of the time.

However, the early 20th century marked a tumultuous period for these coins. The Pittman Act of 1918 authorized the melting down of more than 270 million silver dollars for silver bullion to bolster the British economy during World War I. The vast majority of the melted coins were Morgans, resulting in the loss of countless specimens. Then in 1921, amidst a historic silver bullion repletion, the Morgan design was brought back for one more year before being replaced by the Peace Dollar. Today, these factors contribute to the scarcity of certain Morgan Silver Dollar issues, further enhancing their allure to collectors and numismatists.

History of the Peace Silver Dollar

The Peace Silver Dollar holds a unique position in the annals of American coinage, not just for its artistry but also for the powerful symbol it represented. Following the final mintage of the Morgan Silver Dollars in 1921, the Peace Silver Dollar was introduced the same year, marking the celebration of a world returning to peace after the end of the First World War. These iconic coins were issued from 1921 until 1928 and again for a brief period from 1934 to 1935.

The Peace Dollar’s design was the work of the talented Italian-born American sculptor Anthony de Francisci, whose elegant and poignant design was selected in a national competition. The obverse features the image of Lady Liberty, while the reverse showcases a proudly perched bald eagle at rest, an olive branch in its talons, symbolizing peace. This was a marked departure from previous coin designs, which often depicted the eagle in a stance of war. The Peace Silver Dollar, with its rich historical context and symbolic design, remains a fascinating relic of a specific era, capturing the collective desire for peace and stability. Today, the intermittent issuance, coupled with the historical significance, makes the Peace Silver Dollar a highly sought-after prize for both collectors and numismatists alike.

 2023 Morgan Silver Dollar Design

Design for the 2023 Morgan Dollar remains true to the iconic design that was first issued in 1878. Celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship, the new Morgan Silver Dollar exhibits a distinctive design that sets it apart from other modern issues. Designed by and named after George T. Morgan, the obverse side of the coin features the profile of Lady Liberty, facing left. Surrounding Lady Liberty’s profile are the words “E Pluribus Unum,” the date of mintage, and thirteen stars representing the original thirteen colonies.

The reverse of the 2023 Morgan Silver Dollar depicts a bold, stylized bald eagle with wings outspread, clutching arrows, and an olive branch in its talons, signifying America’s preparedness for war and desire for peace. Encircled by the words “United States of America,” “One Dollar,” and “In God We Trust,” the design beautifully captures the pride and strength of a growing nation. The unique combination of these detailed, symbolically rich designs contributes to the Morgan Silver Dollar’s standing as one of the most revered coins among collectors and numismatists worldwide.

It is important to note, that while vintage Morgan Dollars are struck from .90 fine silver and .10 copper, 2023 Morgan Silver Dollars are struck from .999 fine silver and are brought to life with modern minting techniques and expertise!

2023 Peace Silver Dollar Design

The 2023 Peace Dollar’s obverse and reverse designs remain consistent with the iconic coin’s original design. The Peace Silver Dollar, a coin of profound historical and artistic significance, carries an evocative design capturing the zeitgeist of its time. On the obverse, it features a radiant portrait of Lady Liberty, gazing optimistically toward the sunrise. This image was crafted by Italian-American artist Anthony de Francisci, who used his wife, Teresa, as the model for Liberty. The inscription “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and the year of mintage surround the design. De Francisci’s Liberty is a modernized figure, reflecting the contemporary styles of the Roaring Twenties, a departure from classical representations.

The reverse side of the Peace Silver Dollar features a majestic bald eagle perched on a rock, clutching an olive branch – a universal symbol of peace. The word “Peace” is inscribed on the rock, signifying the end of World War I and the world’s collective yearning for tranquility after the tumultuous war years. Encircling the eagle are the words “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and “One Dollar.” This combination of a modernized Liberty and a peace-bearing eagle set this coin apart, imbuing it with a depth of meaning that continues to resonate with collectors and numismatists today.

While vintage Peace Dollars are struck from .90 fine silver and .10 copper, 2023 Peace Silver Dollars, just like their 2021 counterparts, are struck from .999 fine silver!
