The Morgan Silver Dollar and the Peace Silver Dollar are among the most collected vintage coins ever! But, with very limited exceptions, neither coin has been available with a proof finish. Until now! Here you have a 2-Pc. Set consisting of a modern 2023 Morgan Silver Dollar Proof and a modern 2023 Peace Silver Dollar Proof, each struck at the San Francisco Mint, for the first time!
Two years ago, in 2021, the U.S. Mint brought the Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars back to honor the 100-year anniversaries of these influential coins—the last minting of the Morgan Dollar, and the first minting of the Peace Dollar, both in 1921. The same size as the originals, the modern versions were the first legal-tender Morgan and Peace Dollars in 100 years! And they were spectacularly gorgeous, created with modern technology and historical U.S. Mint assets that showcased their original, timeless designs with even more clarity!
The releases were a massive success, with instant sell-outs on the U.S. Mint’s website. Plus, with so many collectors left empty-handed following the 2021 release due to the limited mintage, the secondary market has continued to see demand for those first year of issue coins, even in 2023.
The 2021 coins were authorized by the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump on January 5, 2021, requiring “the Department of the Treasury to mint and issue coins in honor of the 100th anniversary of the completion of coinage of the Morgan dollar and the 100th anniversary of the commencement of coinage of the Peace dollar.”
Both series were intended to be annual releases, but that plan was stymied last year in 2022 when the U.S. Mint was caught off-guard by the global shortage of the silver blanks required to strike the coins, and cancelled the releases.
Collectors eagerly awaited the 2023 release and were overjoyed to see the U.S. Mint calendar indicate there not only would another Uncirculated version of these popular coins in 2023, but there would also be Morgan and Peace Dollars struck with a proof finish—offering a much higher standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship than coins with non-proof finishes. Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice, unlike non-proofs which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields. While non-proofs are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, these Morgan and Peace Dollar proofs are individually struck by highly skilled artisans creating numismatic masterpieces.
Unlike the vintage original Morgan Silver Dollars and Peace Silver Dollars—which were struck in 90% silver and 10% copper—these modern Morgan and Peace Dollars are struck in 99.9% pure silver.
Collectors seek out the best of the best for their collections, and that’s what you have here—proofs certified by NGC as flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC) condition. Proof coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a top 70 grade representing perfection, even under magnification. The Ultra Cameo (UC) designation means these proofs possess an intense frosted finish on both sides of the proof, with highly polished fields accenting the raised elements.
In addition to being flawless and Ultra Cameo, your proofs will arrive NGC-certified with a First Day of Issue (FDI) designation, which means they have been received for grading within the first 24 hours of release from the mint. These coins are not only the best of the best, they’re also the first of the best.
Each of these perfect, flawless coins comes sonically sealed with an exclusive Morgan/Peace themed label with a hand-signed signature from one of two numismatic rock stars. You have your choice of labels signed by either John Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint and the man who has more coin and medal designs to his credit than any person in U.S. Mint history, or David J. Ryder, the former 34th and 39th Director of the U.S. Mint, who was named as of one Coin World’s “Most Influential People in Numismatics (1960-2020),” and who was instrumental in getting the modern Morgan and Peace Dollars authorized for their centennial anniversary in 2021.
A meager mintage of 400,000 pieces for this year’s Morgan and Peace Dollar Proofs has been authorized—a crazy low number when you consider all the pent-up anticipation and demand for this first-ever release of Proof Morgan and Proof Peace Silver Dollars! The bottom line is that you’ll want to act fast to secure your extraordinary 2023 Silver Dollar Proof 2-Pc. Set, so you don’t wind up without and frustrated.
