Two years ago, in 2021, the U.S. Mint brought the Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars back to honor the 100-year anniversaries of these influential coins—the last minting of the Morgan Dollar, and the first minting of the Peace Dollar, both in 1921. The same size as the originals, the modern versions were the first legal-tender Morgan and Peace Dollars in 100 years! And they were spectacularly gorgeous, created with modern technology and historical U.S. Mint assets that showcased their original, timeless designs with even more clarity! 

The releases were a massive success, with instant sell-outs on the U.S. Mint’s website. Plus, with so many collectors left empty-handed following the 2021 release due to the limited mintage, the secondary market has continued to see demand for those first year of issue coins, even in 2023.

The 2021 coins were authorized by the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act, signed into law by President Donald Trump on January 5, 2021, requiring “the Department of the Treasury to mint and issue coins in honor of the 100th anniversary of the completion of coinage of the Morgan dollar and the 100th anniversary of the commencement of coinage of the Peace dollar.” 

Both series were intended to be annual releases, but that plan was stymied last year in 2022 when the U.S. Mint was caught off-guard by the global shortage of the silver blanks required to strike the coins, and cancelled the releases.

Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice, unlike non-proofs which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields. While non-proofs are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, these Morgan and Peace Dollar proofs are individually struck by highly skilled artisans creating numismatic masterpieces.
