Gold Memorial Proofs Celebrate Her Majesty, the Queen
Designed by Jody Clark, these Commonwealth Mint issues honor the extraordinary life of Queen Elizabeth II. The reverse gracing these extraordinary proofs features a brand-new modern portrait of Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II created by Jody Clark, former Royal Mint designer and current Head of Design at the Commonwealth Mint, exclusively for this memorial program.
Queen Elizabeth II was only 25 when she ascended to the throne. On the day of her coronation, June 2nd, 1953, she took her oath in front of 8,000 guests, including prime ministers and heads of state from around the Commonwealth. After being handed the four symbols of authority—the orb, the scepter, the rod of mercy, and the royal ring of sapphire and rubies—the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Geoffrey Fisher, placed St. Edward’s Crown on her head to complete the ceremony. A shout of ‘God Save the Queen’ was heard, and gun salutes were fired as crowds cheered. An estimated three million people lined the streets of London to catch a glimpse of the new monarch as she made her way to and from Buckingham Palace in the golden state coach. In a following radio broadcast, the Queen said, “Throughout all my life and with all my heart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust”.
In 2022, she became the first U.K. Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee (70 years on the throne), having already surpassed her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria’s 63-year reign to become the longest-serving British Monarch ever.
On September 8th, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire, U.K., at the age of 96. The Crown has passed to her eldest child and heir, King Charles III.
Jody Clark joined the Royal Mint as an engraver in 2012 and has designed several renowned commemorative pieces defining his career, including the 2014 Britannia design, the Queen’s Beasts series, and the fifth definitive Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II featured on British coinage. Jody designed a new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in honor of this program celebrating her life and devoted reign. This portrait will ONLY be used as a reverse design for this memorial program in honor of the Queen’s legacy.
Clark’s modern portrait on the reverse of these coins features the Queen traditionally facing right, wearing the Burmese Ruby Tiara. This tiara features 96 rubies gifted from the people of Burma—believed to possess protection and healing powers against illness. The tiara, created in 1973, features a Tudor Rose symbol of a red rose inside a white rose setting. Each ruby was set in gold, and the diamonds were set in silver to create a floral wreath.
The obverse of these coins features the Bank of Malta Coat of Arms, consisting of two supporting Knights representing confidence and strength, the two virtues incorporated in the Bank of Malta’s motto, on either side of a shield. On the shield is the George Cross, which was awarded to Malta for bravery in April 1942 by King George VI. Laurel and palm branches, symbols of honor and peace, support the mural crown at the top of the coat of arms.
Proofs like these are struck to a much higher standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship than circulated and uncirculated coins. Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies, and struck at least twice, unlike regular coins which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields. While regular coins are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, proofs are individually struck by highly skilled artisans focused on creating masterpieces. Collectors love proofs not only because they’re the best quality, but also because their mintages are typically low.
These Queen Elizabeth II Coins are available struck in one kilo, five ounces, two ounces and one ounce of high-purity 99.99% pure gold (€500, €100, €50 and €25 legal tender respectively).
Collectors seek out the best of the best for their collections, and that’s what you’ve got here. You can secure these Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Proofs certified by NGC as flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC) condition. Coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a top 70 grade representing perfection, even under magnification. The Ultra Cameo (UC) designation means these coins possess an intense frosted finish on both sides of the coin, with highly polished fields that contrast beautifully with the raised elements.
In addition to being flawless and Ultra Cameo, your coins will arrive NGC-certified with a First Day of Issue (FDI) designation—which means these coins have been received for grading on or before the first day of release from the mint. First Day of Issue designations are sought-after because there are so few of them compared to the overall population.
Each coin will be encapsulated by NGC with our Jody Clark hand-signed signature labels.
Authorized worldwide mintages for each of these Gold Queen Elizabeth II Proofs are very limited. Only 10 kilo gold, only 30 five-ounce gold, only 60 two-ounce gold, and only 200 one-ounce gold were authorized. Reducing the populations further, the Proofs here are perfect, Ultra Cameo, with a First Day of Issue designation and a hand-signed label.
Seriously—don’t wait on this. Since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, demand has been high for coinage featuring the effigy of Her Majesty, and these coins go a step beyond with a brand new Jody Clark portrait created just for this release. These coins, in perfect condition, with sought-after designations and hand-signed labels, will not last—especially considering the tiny mintages.
