The 1839 Una and the Lion gold coin, with its depiction of Queen Victoria, has been hailed as one of the most beautiful coins ever struck. The £1000 British gold coin was minted to commemorate the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign, with a design that portrayed the monarch as Una (truth), the principal character in Edmund Spenser’s epic, “The Fairie Queene.” She is walking to the left of a lion, Lady Una’s guardian, generally thought to represent the British people. At the time the design was viewed as a particularly bold one by prolific nineteenth century engraver William Wyon because it was the first time a British monarch had been depicted as a fictional character, Una, “one of the most beautiful princesses that was ever seen.” The original Una and the Lion coins were likely intended for collector sets as production ran to just a few hundred coins.
Now, in honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s 95th birthday, and in respect for her great-great grandmother, Queen Victoria, comes this gorgeous new Alderney Una and the Lion design, with Queen Elizabeth II replacing Queen Victoria as Una. Minted by the Commonwealth Mint, these coins mark the first time that images of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II found on both sides of a coin have been created by the same person, Jody Clark, former designer at United Kingdom’s The Royal Mint and current Head of Design at the Commonwealth Mint.
These stunning legal tender coins are not only highly detailed, but they also come struck in the same high purity that collectors have come to expect from the Commonwealth Mint. You’re able to choose between coins struck in one ounce or one full kilo of 99.99% pure gold; in two ounces or one full kilo of 99.9% fine silver; and in one ounce of 99.95% pure platinum.
Struck in Proof condition, these coins have been specially manufactured using polished dies and selected planchets (metal blanks), with frosty elements that sit in high contrast over highly polished, mirrored backgrounds in a remarkable tribute to the mastery of original Una and the Lion coin designer Wyon, and to Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning monarch in Britain’s history.
