For the very first time ever, the iconic Maple Leaf design has been re-sculpted in Ultra-High Relief (UHR), by Susan Taylor, former RCM Senior Engraver. Taylor is one of the foremost artists in the world when it comes to sculpting UHR coin designs (as evident from her work on the 2019 Peace & Liberty Medal). Further, she worked under Walter Ott during his tenure at the Royal Canadian Mint and was the only person the RCM felt had the skill and experience to master this momentous task. The result is stunning!
Ultra-high relief is not simply a feature of these coins, but rather their core. When the RCM commissioned Taylor to re-sculpt Ott’s 1979 design, a major part of their decision was based on her expertise in sculpting detailed, three-dimensional coins. And not only did Susan have to create a natural, UHR design of a maple leaf—an object which is normally quite flat—but she had to do so while staying true to Walter Ott’s original design. The result shows Walter Ott’s iconic Maple leaf design like it has never been seen before, with relief heights varying from 1.4 mm to 3 mm—five to ten times higher than standard.
