In honor of the 240th Anniversary of the Eye of Providence on the U.S. Great Seal, these 2022 legal-tender coins commemorate that unearthly icon, a radiant, staring, all-seeing eye representing the omniscience of God. Just like on the U.S. Great Seal, the radiant Eye of Providence hovering above an unfinished pyramid on an empty plain graces the reverse of these coins. The luminous, floating eye inside a triangle symbol is thought to have originated in the 15th or 16th century, as a sign of God’s compassionate watchfulness over humanity. The triangle is thought to have represented the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; the rays of light God’s holy radiance; and the eye itself, God’s all-seeing watch.
The symbol has grown in popularity over the centuries. Following the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, a Great Seal committee was appointed to create a two-sided design. A portrayal of the bald eagle was selected for the front, and the Eye of Providence was chosen for the back. The Great Seal design for the Eye, above the unfinished pyramid with thirteen steps symbolizing the original states, was created by artist—and member of the Great Seal committee—Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere, who envisioned the design as related to the wording of the Declaration, “protection of Divine Providence.”
Both Great Seal designs are currently featured on the U.S. $1 Dollar Bill.
However—the U.S. was not alone in adopting the symbol. At about the same time, the Freemasons, the world’s oldest fraternal organization tracing its origins to local guilds of stonemasons in the 13th century, incorporated the Eye of Providence into their own symbology. Known for their secret initiation rituals, the group is at the center of many sinister conspiracy theories. As a result, many believe the inclusion of the Eye of Providence in the U.S. Great Seal was a blatant sign that the Freemasons—along with a group known as the Illuminati, a secret society originally existing from 1776 to 1785 that claimed enlightenment along with a plan to control the world—had infiltrated the U.S. government and were in control.
Each coin was struck in dual-sided ultra-high relief, accentuated by concave, bowl-like fields. Additionally, the Eye of Providence on the reverse has been struck in Super Incuse, allowing it to appear as if it’s peering out from a triangular hole in the coin. This combination of impressively sculpted elements, sloped fields, and the sunken Eye of Providence on the reverse creates a beautiful, and mysterious, effect.
The obverse features a heraldic Owl of Minerva, a symbol of the Illuminati, eyes wide open and staring straight at the viewer. Its wings are spread as if taking flight, and it clutches the Eye of Providence in its talons. The reverse features the image on the reverse of the U.S. Great Seal—the hovering Eye of Providence, completing the pyramid.
The obverse and reverse images as on the Great Seal have been modified to include 13 different design elements and inscriptions hidden in plain sight. Can you find them?
The coins in this release were struck with two different finishes. On the silver coins, the design is enhanced by an antiqued finish, applied by hand, along with selective gold plating applied to the super incuse Eye of Providence on the reverse. The combination of dark, antiqued surfaces and a polished gold eye is spectacular and serves to accentuate the ultra-high relief and sunken design elements. The gold coins were struck with a traditional Ultra Cameo Proof finish, with frosted surfaces on the raised elements and brilliant, mirror-like backgrounds. The result appears nearly black and white in the right lighting.
These 2022 Eye of Providence Coins are struck in one ounce of 99.9% gold, or five ounces or two ounces of 99.9% fine silver, and have $250, $10 and $5 Niue legal-tender values respectively. You can also select all three coins in a 3-Pc. Set.
For any collectible item, collectors want the finest quality available. Proofs and coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a grade of 70 representing absolute perfection, even under magnification. These are the grades most sought-after by collectors.
The gold proofs here have been certified as flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC), and the silver coins have been certified as flawless Mint State-70 (MS70), by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). There are no higher grades.
Not only have these Eye of Providence Coins achieved perfect grades, they’ve also qualified for the desired First Day of Issue (FDI) designation. The FDI designation means the coins were struck on or before their first day of release from the mint. First Day of Issue coins are thought to have crisper strikes than those struck later because the dies are considered to be fresh, with less mileage on them, and because there are so few of them compared to the overall population.
These Gold and Silver Eye of Providence Coins are not only the best of the best, they’re also the first of the best.
Striking these coins in Dual Ultra-High Relief with Super Incuse is no easy task. Mintages of these coins are incredibly limited, with just 299 one-ounce gold proofs, just 999 five-ounce silver coins and just 1,999 two-ounce silver coins. Even fewer of each has received a flawless PF70 or MS70 grade, certified as FDI.
