This second release in the exciting new Dragons of the World coin series, which showcases dragons as depicted in different cultures around the world, features the Egyptian Dragon. Egyptian Pharaohs would often display dragon symbols on their crowns for protection in the afterlife, as well as use them to honor the patron goddess. Each coin features exquisite high relief designs struck on both the sides of a “cupped” planchet that makes the coin convex on one side and concave on the other. The results are breathtaking!
Egyptian Dragons date back to 3,000 B.C. when they were sent by the gods to protect the land and underworld. Depicted in various forms throughout history, ranging from serpent-like creatures to winged beasts, the Egyptian Dragon has a unique place in mythology as a symbol of power and strength—sometimes good, sometimes evil. Some were known to cause earthquakes, thunderstorms, and solar eclipses while others were known for guarding the temples on the tombs of departed leaders.
In Egyptian mythology, the most powerful and feared creature was known as “Apep.” Often referred to as the “Lord of Chaos and Darkness,” Apep, an enemy of the sun god Ra, is depicted as a massive serpent that stretched across the sky and tried to swallow the sun each day. Every night, Apep would try to prevent the sun from rising, and every morning, Ra would defeat him and bring light back to the world.
The use of dragons in Egyptian mythology has had a lasting impact on popular culture, and they continue to be a popular motif today in modern art, literature, entertainment and fashion. They are often depicted as powerful and majestic creatures in paintings, sculptures, and other forms of artwork—appearing on clothing, jewelry, and accessories often associated with the gothic and punk subcultures.
The Egyptian Dragon is the second release in this new five-part coin series presenting dragons from around the world, and it follows the initial release of the popular Welsh Red Dragon.
Each coin features an exquisite proof finish that showcases the high relief design, with razor-sharp detail and mirror-like fields. But achieving that spectacular finish is especially challenging due to the intense pressure required to strike the intricate design onto these coins’ distinctive and dramatic “cupped” planchet. It’s unlike any other coin in your collection.
That high relief design is outstanding, with the reverse featuring a fierce Egyptian Dragon in a folded, almost bat-like, pose along with “Egyptian Dragon” and “Dragons of the World” along the outer edge. The obverse including Fiji’s ethnic Code of Arms along with the coin’s specifications and denomination.
The intricate, highly detailed reverse image of these coins was designed by Zhu Xihua, an artist at China’s Shanghai Mint. Mr. Zhu is renowned across Asia for his animal artwork. He has been working as a coin designer and engraver for over a decade and has contributed to the design of over 100 commemorative coins.

You can also choose the 4-Pc. Set consisting of each of the four Egyptian Dragon coins mentioned above, or a 3-Pc. Set consisting of the one-ounce gold coin and the five and two-ounce silver coins.
Proofs and coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a grade of 70 representing absolute perfection, even under magnification. There is no higher grade. These Egyptian Dragon Proofs have been certified as perfect Proof-70 (PF70) by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), one of the top coin-grading services in the world. Not only that, each coin has also been certified Ultra Cameo (UC), a designation given to coins that possess an intense frosted finish on both sides of the coin, with highly polished fields accenting the raised elements.
Finally, each Egyptian Dragon Proof carries a First Day of Issue (FDI) designation. The FDI designation means these coins were turned over for grading within the first 24 hours of the program’s official mint release. First Day of Issue proofs are sought-after because they are fresh and sharp, minted early, and because there are so few of them compared to the overall population. These Proofs are not only the best of the best, they’re the first of the best. Take a look for yourself to see what all the excitement is about!
