First Release in an Exciting New Coin Series

This first release in an inspiring new legal-tender coin series takes the most exquisite designs from vintage U.S. currency notes and features them on legal-tender coins – for the FIRST TIME EVER! Why hasn’t this been done before? Through the years, there have been many beloved currency notes revered for their beautiful and impressive designs. And now many of these exquisite designs will make their way onto a legal tender coin series. This first release of gold and silver coins features two of them, from 1899 and 1901!

Gorgeous, Historic Designs on this First Release

The obverse comes from the front side of the famed 1899-series $5 Silver Certificate and features a depiction of Sioux Native American Oncpapa Tribe Chieftain named Ta-to’-ka-in’-yan-ka, also known as Running Antelope. This was the first time that a Native American was featured as the central subject on U.S. paper currency. To make the image fit on the note, the headdress was patterned after that of the Pawnees, another Native American tribe, given those worn by the Sioux were much larger. The obverse side of the new coin includes a detailed effigy of Running Antelope. This classic design also includes a ring of 14 stars around the chieftain—7 on each side—“ONCPAPA,” and the date. The number ‘7” is important to the Sioux given there are seven main tribes that make up the greater Sioux Nation.

The reverse features a depiction of the famous Bison design as seen on the front of the beloved 1901-series $10 U.S. Legal Tender Note, along with the denomination and reference to the issuing authority, the Oglala Lakota Sioux Nation. Arguably one of the most desired U.S. currency notes of all time, the $10 Legal Tender Bison Note was so popular that the image was re-used on the 30-cent postage stamp in 1923, and again on a $1 Military Payment Certificate issued to troops during the Vietnam War. Today, this note currently ranks as #6 in the book 100 Greatest American Currency Notes. Some collectors even believe the popularity of this note helped serve as inspiration for the popular U.S. Buffalo nickel design that appeared on the 5-cent coin 12 years later (1913).

Impressive Ultra-High Relief Surfaces ON BOTH SIDES!

Striking these coins in Dual Ultra-High Relief (UHR) is no easy task, but the results are spectacular! Depending on which option you choose, the obverse relief varies from 6 mm high to 3 mm high, and the reverse relief varies from 2.2 mm high to 1.7 mm high. For the sake of comparison, consider that on a Washington Quarter, George Washington’s head protruding from the field is less than .3 of one millimeter, and two U.S. Roosevelt dimes stacked on top of one reach a height of just 2.7 mm.

Brilliant Uncirculated Surfaces

Each coin comes with a gleaming Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) finish that features frosty elements on the high points of the designs, while the backgrounds have a flawless, satiny appearance. This striking process brings out every intricate detail of the Native American chieftain and bison elements as seen on the original U.S. currency notes from over a century ago. To further enhance the look, the silver coins have a special, hand-applied “antique wash” added to them, which allows the intricate details of each design to be even more prevalent.

Struck in 99.9% Gold and Silver

Sizes authorized for this sensational release include coins struck in one ounce of 99.9% gold ($50 Oglala Lakota Sioux Nation legal tender), and coins struck in five ounces and two ounces of 99.9% fine silver ($5 and $2 legal tender, respectively). You can also choose the 3-Pc. Set that includes all three spectacular coins.
