One of the oldest and most recognized coins in the world, the Sovereign is considered the flagship coin of The Royal Mint (TRM). It’s the only gold coin struck on five different continents around the globe, and it dates to the Tudor era when Henry VII ordered the issue of a large gold coin of 20 shillings. The modern version, featuring Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci’s St. George and the Dragon reverse design, has been around for more than two centuries.
Despite its beauty, the St. George and the dragon design was replaced with a heraldic design of the Royal Arms in 1825. It wasn’t until the reign of Queen Victoria that Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon design returned to The Sovereign in 1871. The design has since appeared on Sovereigns struck for every monarch. The 2024 Sovereign is the first “standard” issue Proof Sovereign of King Charles III, featuring both Pistrucci’s classic design and the first definitive coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.
Benedetto Pistrucci’s design for the reverse of the Sovereign features St. George on horseback, engaged with a dragon. His right hand clutches a short sword, and his left hand clutches his horse’s reigns as it rears back. He wears a plumed helmet and cloak which billows behind him. Below him lies the dragon, impaled by St. George’s now broken spear.
Described by contemporary judges as “the handsomest [design] in Europe” and “unique and inimitable”, the design was a breath of fresh air compared to the stuffy heraldry common on most British coins of the period. While small changes have been made through the years, the design remains largely unchanged from Pistrucci’s original work. Inscriptions include only the artist’s name, “PISTRUCCI” and the year of issue, “2024.”
The obverse features the first definitive portrait of King Charles III on a standard issue Sovereign, by artist and sculptor Martin Jennings which was personally approved by the King. The inscriptions include “CHARLES III DEI. GRA. REX. FID. DEF.” meaning “King Charles III By the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith”. Martin Jennings has designed many public sculptures in the U.K. and has sculpted great writers and poets including Charles Dickens.
Proofs like these are struck to a much higher standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship than circulated and uncirculated coins. Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies, and struck at least twice, unlike regular coins which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields. While regular coins are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, proofs are individually struck by highly skilled artisans focused on creating masterpieces. Collectors love proofs not only because they’re the best quality, but also because their mintages are typically low compared to the non-proof populations.
Each of the 2024 Sovereign Proofs are struck in 91.67% 22-karat gold. You may choose the individual Sovereign coin or the 5-Pc. Set consisting of a Five Sovereign, Double Sovereign, Sovereign, Half Sovereign and Quarter Sovereign.
