You may remember when the gorgeous Canadian Peace Dollar design debuted on the reverse of the 2019 Peace & Liberty Medals, which honored the sacrifices made by veterans of both the U.S. and Canada. Created by Susan Taylor, retired senior engraver of the Royal Canadian Mint, the design boasted the incredible detail that only a master’s hand can create. In that design, Susan echoed Anthony de Francisci’s design for the American Peace Dollar introduced in 1921, saying she was inspired by the way that it “evoked a clear and elegant message of not only peace but also of harmony and grace.”
For the FIRST time in the series, for the fifth issue, the Royal Canadian Mint is adding selective platinum plating to the gold coins and 24-karat yellow gold plating to the silver coins, plus another FIRST, an intricate, dramatic new field pattern with elements from the crown on Lady’s Peace’s head on the obverse and reverse of both gold and silver coins. ADDITIONALLY, this release will be the LAST annual issue featuring the Peace Bust reverse designed by Susan Taylor, AND it will be the LAST time the effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse.
These 2024 Peace Coins are struck in one ounce of high-purity 99.99% pure gold ($200 Canada legal tender), five ounces of 99.99% of fine silver ($50 Canada legal tender) or one ounce of 99.99% fine silver ($1 Canada legal tender). Each of these coins is also available as part of a 3-Pc. Set.
Continuing the sophisticated design trends of the first four releases, the 2024 Canada Peace Dollar goes to another level entirely with a gorgeous Ultra-High Relief (UHR) design projecting over 1.3 mm off the coin’s surface, that is accented by not one, not two, but three different finishing effects.
Selective Platinum and Gold Plating—a first for the Peace Dollar series, the one-ounce gold coin has been selectively plated in platinum, while the five-ounce silver and one-ounce silver coins have been selectively plated in yellow (24-karat) gold. The plating was added specifically and precisely to the bust of Lady Peace on the reverse, the late Queen on the obverse, and the raised rim and edge encircling the design. The result is an unbelievable contrast that really draws out the new field pattern.
Unique Field Pattern—as a last honor for the original Canada Peace Dollar design, artists at the RCM have created a unique new field pattern built from the crown of olive and maple leaves on Lady Peace’s head. These tiny design elements were crafted into an intricate arrangement encircling the design and filling the fields. Finished in satin, the pattern contrasts subtly with the polished fields, to stunning effect.
Ultra-Cameo Proof Finish—a traditional proof coin carries a lot of benefits—multiple strikes, clean, sharp designs, and a beautiful array of frosted raised elements and polished fields. However, a constant challenge in striking coins of such high relief is that the tremendous pressure needed to create this relief makes the perfectly polished fields expected on a proof coin nearly impossible to achieve—but RCM mint technicians were up to the task, providing these coins with a finish as beautiful as on any proof coin!
Proofs and coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a grade of 70 representing absolute perfection, even under magnification. There is no higher grade—and that’s what you have here. These proofs have been certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), one of the top coin-grading services in the world, as perfect Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC), a designation given to flawless coins that possess an intense frosted finish on both sides, with highly polished fields accenting the raised elements.
Not only are they perfect, these proofs have also been certified by NGC as First Day of Issue (FDI), meaning they were struck within 24 hours of their official release from the mint, or as First Day of Production (FDP), meaning they were struck on the first day the mint began production. FDI and FDP proofs are desired because they are fresh and sharp, and because there are so few of them compared to the overall population.
These coins are encapsulated with exclusive Peace labels hand-signed by designer Susan Taylor, who served the RCM as an engraver, sculptor and senior engraver for 33 years before her retirement.
