Only Here Can You Secure Mint-Identified 2024 China Pandas!

Pure Silver, Perfect, with Sought-After Designations and Signature Labels

Giant Pandas, representing peace, good luck and friendship, have increasingly become known as a national symbol of China. So, it’s no surprise these woolly,-furry beasts are the face of the country’s silver bullion coins—Silver Pandas, introduced in 1983—which are among the most collected, most anticipated annual issues for collectors around the world.

But, while these coins are renowned among collectors for their exquisite one-year-only designs, high quality craftsmanship and 99.9% fineness, what you have here are Silver Pandas identified by mint—which is a big deal! Oh, and they’re also perfect, with FDI designations and hand-signed labels. Keep reading.

Why Should I Care Which Mint Struck these 2024 China Pandas?

When coins are struck at several mints, like these China Pandas, knowing a coin’s mint of origin allows you to understand just how scarce the coin really is by pinpointing its exact mintage. Dating back to the very first coins struck in the ancient world, minters have used special marks to identify where the coin was struck. Today, these marks not only give us the coin’s place of origin, but also define the degree of scarcity of the coins by determining the mintage.

But there are no mint marks in the world of China Pandas—with one exception, 1987. Both before and since that year, collectors purchasing China Pandas could only guess where the coins were struck. Peter Anthony, the foremost expert on China Pandas and the author of the Gold and Silver Panda Coin Buying Guide, explained why knowing the mint mark could change the way China Pandas are collected: “The lack of information has frustrated collectors. It would be exciting news if the production mint could be identified. Instead of collecting only one coin each year, collectors will want to buy two or three Panda coins (from the three mints). As word of this spread in China and around the world, demand for Panda coins could be expected to reach new heights.”

Mint Marks Can Enhance Collectability

Here’s what legendary numismatist Jeff Garrett (former president of the American Numismatic Association and the expert the Smithsonian Institution® consults) said on the subject of mint marks that identify where a particular coin is minted: “Collectors highly covet coins with low mintage figures. The simple initials or ‘mint mark’ designating where a coin was struck can add, in some cases, millions of dollars in value. One example is the 1927-D Double Eagle. The tiny ‘D’ mint mark on the 1927 Double Eagle increases the coin’s value from $2,000 to $2,000,000 because only a handful of coins survived from the Denver mintage versus tens of thousands from the Philadelphia mintage.”

China’s Best Kept Secret Revealed!

We’ve been trying to solve this issue for years. Though we made some headway in 2016, it wasn’t until 2019 that we were finally able to find a solution to the China Pandas mint dilemma. Ever since, we’ve been able to present our customers with coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), one of the world’s leading third-party grading services, as coming from a particular mint.

Each of the China Pandas here is certified as being struck at the Shenzhen-Guobao Mint (G), the Shanghai Mint (S) or the Shenyang Mint (Y). Though we don’t know what the exact percentages per mint will be for these 2024 Pandas, last year, the Shenzhen Mint struck 73.13% of the total mintage, the Shanghai Mint struck 18.03% and the Shenyang Mint struck 9.84%. What that means is that now you can add coins from any or all three mints to your collection—if you act fast.

New One-Year-Only Design—The “Series within a Series”

Each new year brings a new one-year-only reverse design to the Silver Panda series. But starting in 2019, those designs became a “series within a series,” allowing collectors to view a panda cub growing into maturity. This year marks the sixth year of the China Mint’s “cycle” of Panda designs.

This 2024 one-year-only reverse depicts a delightful, heartwarming design of a Mother Panda Bear playing with her young cub, created by Huang Qin—renowned within the numismatic community for her numerous Chinese commemorative coin designs, one of which won a Coty (Coin of the Year) Award for “Best Gold Coin.” As always, the China Panda obverse depicts the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests in the Temple of Heaven (in Beijing) encircled by the phrase “People’s Republic of China” in Mandarin Chinese completed with the year of issue, 2024.

Mr. Gu is highly respected in China’s numismatic industry and was responsible for many of the innovations and production processes used by China’s national mints today.

This is the first time that a Mint Director from any of China’s national mints has signed an NGC label intended for the North American market.
