Every year, collectors around the world anxiously await the release of China’s Gold Panda coins. They’re a big deal due to their stunning one-year-only designs and their limited authorized worldwide mintages. But—while these coins are renowned among collectors for their awe-inspiring designs, quality craftsmanship and 99.9% fineness—what you have here are Gold Pandas identified by mint, which is also a very big deal! Oh, and they’re also perfect, with FDI designations and hand-signed labels. Keep reading.
When coins are struck at several mints, like these China Pandas struck at mints in Shenzhen (Guobao), Shanghai and Shenyang, knowing a coin’s mint of origin allows you to understand just how scarce the coin really is by pinpointing its exact mintage. Since the very first coins struck in the ancient world, minters have used special marks to identify where a coin was struck—which in turn often leads to an idea of the coin’s scarcity in relation to other, similar coins.
But there are no mint marks in the world of China Pandas—with one exception, 1987. Both before and since that year, collectors purchasing China Pandas could only guess at where the coins were struck, something that led to “frustrated collectors”. While the mints in China are very secretive about mintage figures, our contacts in China reported that the production rates are about 60% Shenzhen, 25% Shenyang, and only 15% for Shanghai. And in 2019 our buyers worked closely with mint officials to ensure the coins could be correctly identified as to their mint of origin.
Here’s what legendary numismatist Jeff Garrett (former president of the American Numismatic Association and the expert the Smithsonian Institution® consults) said on the subject of mint marks that identify where a particular coin is minted: “Collectors highly covet coins with low mintage figures. The simple initials or ‘mint mark’ designating where a coin was struck can add in some cases millions of dollars in value. One example is the 1927-D Double Eagle. The tiny ‘D’ mint mark on the 1927 Double Eagle increases the coin’s value from $2,000 to $2,000,000, because only a handful of coins survived from the Denver mintage versus tens of thousands from the Philadelphia mintage.”
We’ve been trying to solve this issue with regard to China Pandas for years. Though we made some headway in 2016, it wasn’t until 2019 that we were finally able to find a solution to the China Pandas mint dilemma. Ever since, we’ve been able to present our customers with coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), one of the world’s leading third-party grading services, as coming from a particular mint.
Each of the 2024 China Gold Pandas here is certified as being struck at the Shenzhen-Guobao Mint (G), the Shanghai Mint (S) or the Shenyang Mint (Y). As of 12/31/23, the Shenzhen-Guobao Mint had struck 62.16% of the China Pandas, and the Shanghai Mint and the Shenyang Mint had each struck 18.92% of the China Pandas.
Each new year brings a new one-year-only reverse design to the Gold Panda series. But starting in 2019, those designs became a “series within a series,” allowing collectors to view a panda cub growing into maturity. This year marks the sixth year of the China Mint’s new “cycle” of Panda designs.
This 2024 one-year-only reverse depicts a delightful, heart-warming design of a Mother Panda Bear playing with her young cub. As always, the China Panda obverse depicts the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests in the Temple of Heaven (in Beijing) encircled by the phrase “People’s Republic of China” in Mandarin Chinese completed with the year of issue, 2024.
