This impressive 2023 Canadian Peace Dollar carries a design that debuted on the reverse of the 2019 Peace & Liberty Medals, which honored the sacrifices made by veterans of both the U.S. and Canada. Created by Susan Taylor, retired senior engraver of the Royal Canadian Mint, this design boasts the incredible detail that only a master’s hand can create. In that design, Susan echoed Anthony de Francisci’s design for the American Peace Dollar introduced in 1921, saying she was inspired by the way that it “evoked a clear and elegant message of not only peace but also of harmony and grace.”
This marks the fourth coin in the legal-tender coin series, the fifth Royal Canadian Mint program with the renowned Susan Taylor Peace Design, and likely the last that will hold the effigy of Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II. The 2023 Peace Dollar was in production at the RCM when the news came that Queen Elizabeth II had passed away. If production had begun even a few days later, it is very likely the Mint would have postponed production until a new effigy was in use.
This release now stands as one of the few 2023-dated coins carrying the late Queen’s effigy, particularly the exclusive version of the effigy used by the RCM. This effigy, designed by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt in 2003, recalls the effigy of her father, George VI, who also chose to be portrayed without a crown. It will likely be the final time that this effigy will appear in a non-transitional state on the coins in this popular Canadian series.
The 2020 Canadian Peace Dollars, the first legal-tender Peace Dollars, were struck in one-ounce silver and one-ounce gold, with an ultra-high relief (UHR) design and a traditional proof finish. The Mint sold out fast. The following year, for the 2021 issue, the coin featured a reverse proof finish. It was met with the same sold-out popularity. Continuing the sophisticated design trends of the first two releases, the 2022 Canada Peace Dollar went to another level entirely with a “pulsating” design that created an astonishing effect that must be seen to be believed! Not only that, but for the first time ever, the RCM added a Canada Peace Dollar struck in five ounces of silver to accompany the one-ounce gold and one-ounce silver versions, all with the pulsating design.
Continuing the sophisticated design trends of the first two releases, the 2023 Canada Peace Dollar goes to another level entirely with a gorgeous Ultra-High Relief (UHR) design projecting over 1.3 mm off the coin’s surface, that is accented by not one, not two, but three different finishing effects.
Selective Rose Gold Plating – A first for the Peace Dollar series, each of these stunning coins has been selectively plated in rose gold. Not often seen on coins, rose gold is an alloy composed of 75% gold, 20-23% copper, and a balance of silver. The alloy shines with an attractive “rosy” pink color, contrasting with both silver and yellow gold, thereby earning its name. On these coins, the rose gold covers the fields and outer rim/edge, resulting in a lovely contrast between the plated fields and the exposed silver or gold.
Pulsating Field – This minting technology allows hundreds of micro-engineered, precision-engraved, sub-millimeter-scale surfaces to be struck into the reverse fields of these coins. When combined with the polished dies and intense pressure needed to produce a UHR-proof coin, these hundreds of surfaces turn into tiny mirrors reflecting light in all directions. It’s a stupendous effect when simply viewed straight on, but the “pulsating” effect that comes from the arresting visuals created when the coin is rotated is truly impressive. The five-ounce silver size (see below) uses a much larger pattern and includes its own, unique laser-etched pattern on the obverse.
Ultra Cameo Proof Finish – A traditional proof coin carries a lot of benefits—multiple strikes, clean, sharp designs, and a beautiful array of frosted raised elements and polished fields. However, a constant challenge in striking coins of such high relief is that the tremendous pressure needed to create this relief makes the flat, perfectly polished fields expected on a proof coin nearly impossible to achieve. These coins offered an even more complicated challenge given the added tasks of striking the pulsating effect onto the fields of the reverse, and applying the fine, rose gold plating. Despite the challenges, RCM mint technicians were up to the task, providing these coins with a finish as beautiful as on any proof coin!
These 2023 Peace Coins are struck in one ounce of high-purity 99.99% pure gold ($200 Canada legal tender), five ounces of 99.99% of fine silver ($50 Canada legal tender) or one ounce of 99.99% fine silver ($1 Canada legal tender). Each of these coins is also available as part of a 3-Pc. Set.
Proofs and coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a grade of 70 representing absolute perfection, even under magnification. There is no higher grade. These proofs have been certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the top coin-grading services in the world, as perfect Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70 UC), a designation given to flawless coins that possess an intense frosted finish on both sides, with highly polished fields accenting the raised elements.
Not only are they perfect, these proofs have also been certified by NGC as First Day of Issue (FDI), meaning they were struck before the official release date, or as First Day of Production (FDP), meaning they were struck on the first day the mint began production. FDI and FDP proofs are desired because they are fresh and sharp and because there are so few of them compared to the overall population.
