Here you have two series that are among the most collected, most highly anticipated annual issues for collectors around the world: China’s Gold Pandas, first released in 1982, and China’s Silver Pandas, first released a year after it’s gold sibling (in 1983).
For the past 20 years, there’s been no hotter coin market in the world than China. Why? Two reasons. First, in 2004 the Chinese government changed their laws to allow Chinese citizens to own precious metal coins. And second, the Chinese middle class has exploded, growing to a population larger than the entire U.S., exhibiting the hunger for, and the means to acquire, their national coins. As a result, there’s been an explosion in demand for Chinese coins—and China Pandas have led the way. Want proof? Just for example, look at how the mintages for Silver Pandas have increased, averaging 149,000 coins minted during each of the first seven years (1989-1995), to 10,000,000 coins in 2017 and beyond. That’s a whopping increase of 6,611%!
Due to that increased demand, China had to start striking China Pandas at three different mints, Shenzhen-Guobao, Shanghai, and Shenyang, something that both thrilled and frustrated Panda collectors. They were thrilled because it meant mint sets were possible, with one coin from each mint. But they were also frustrated because, since the coins don’t bear a mint mark, there’s no way to tell a Shenzhen-Guobao-minted Panda from a Shanghai-minted Panda from a Shenyang-minted Panda, making assembling a mint set impossible.
Peter Anthony, the foremost expert on Silver and Gold Pandas and author of the Gold and Silver Panda Coin Buying Guide, had this to say on this topic: “The lack of information has frustrated collectors. It would be exciting news if the production mint could be identified. Instead of collecting only one coin each year, collectors will want to buy two or three Panda coins (from the three mints). As word of this spread in China and around the world, demand for Panda coins could be expected to reach new heights.”
We finally solved the mint identification dilemma in 2019. Ever since, we’ve been able to present our customers with Gold and Silver China Pandas certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), one of the world’s leading third-party grading services, as being struck at the Shenzhen-Guobao Mint, the Shanghai Mint or the Shenyang Mint, as well as full Gold and Silver Panda Sets consisting of coins struck at each facility!
Each new year brings a new one-year-only reverse design to the Gold and Silver Panda series. But starting in 2019, those designs became a “series within a series,” allowing collectors to watch a panda cub grow into maturity. This year marks the fifth year of the China Mint’s new “cycle” of Panda designs—which will last through 2028—a 10-year cycle!
This 2023 one-year-only reverse design depicts a delightful, heart-warming image of two panda cubs playing in a tree, one offering a paw to help the other. It’s a scene that can’t help but bring a smile to your face, designed by Tong Fang, renowned within the numismatic community for her numerous Chinese commemorative coin designs, one of which won a Coty (Coin of the Year) Award for “Best Gold Coin.” She has also been selected to create the Panda coin design that will be released in 2027.
As always, the obverse depicts the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests in the Temple of Heaven (in Beijing) encircled by the phrase “People’s Republic of China” in Chinese, with the year of issue, 2023.
