China’s vaunted Panda legal-tender coin series is among the most collected and highly anticipated annual issues for collectors around the world. In addition to innovative, one-year-only designs, this series has also been issued in four different precious metals: the first Gold Pandas were released in 1982; the first Silver Pandas were released in 1983; the first Platinum Pandas were released in 1987, the first Palladium Pandas were released in 1989. Each of these Panda coin varieties has featured designs, sizes, and finishes that made each worth owning. But for 2023, the China Mint took it to the next level—in VIVID COLOR!

Six Quick Things You Should Know About These New 2023 China Pandas…

1. For the FIRST TIME EVER, the China Mint is issuing world-renowned Panda series coins with a spectacular color element on the reverse that spectacularly elevates these Pandas over past years. The color appears on the Kilo Gold and Kilo Silver Proof Pandas as well as the 150-gram Gold and 150-gram Silver sizes. (The 100-gram Gold and 50-gram Gold coins feature the same design, but they don’t include the color treatment.) 
2. All Proof Gold and Silver Panda coins are larger than their uncirculated versions (which top out at 30-gram sizes). The kilo and 150-gram sizes represent the largest Gold and Silver Panda series coins issued by the China Mint. Their large diameter and impressive heft make them a unique showpiece in any Panda coin collection.
3. For the FIRST TIME EVER, the China Mint is issuing the Platinum Panda in a 3-Gram size.
4. For the FIRST TIME EVER, the China Mint is issuing the Platinum Panda in a 30-Gram size with an exquisite proof finish. 5. Only 15% of the total authorized Platinum Panda mintages (5,000 30-Gram and 30,000 3-Gram) were made available outside of China.

One-Year-Only “Series Within a Series” Design Continues

Each new year brings a new reverse design to the Panda series. But starting in 2019, those designs became a “series within a series,” allowing collectors to watch a Panda bear grow from a baby cub (2019) through its maturation period (which will last through 2028)—a 10-year cycle! That makes 2023 the fifth year of the cycle!

The reverse is the work of well-known Panda coin artist Ms. Tong Fang, and it features a pair of playful young Panda bears frolicking in a tree. The obverse depicts the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests in the Temple of Heaven (in Beijing) encircled by the phrase “People’s Republic of China” in Chinese, with the year of issue, 2023. The Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests has represented abundant harvests in Chinese culture for hundreds of years.

Why Proofs Matter

Minted in far fewer numbers than uncirculated coins, Panda Proofs are struck to a much higher standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship than non-proof coins. Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies and struck at least twice, unlike regular coins which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields. While regular Pandas are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, Proof Pandas are individually struck by highly skilled artisans who are creating numismatic masterpieces. Proof coins of these sizes allow for even more dramatic and spectacular design elements.Collectors love proofs because they’re the best quality, and also because of their relative scarcity compared to circulated and non-proof coins. 

Struck in 99.9% Gold and Silver, and 99.95% Platinum

Gold Pandas are available in 99.9% gold in a variety of weights (kilo, 150 grams, 100 grams and 50 grams). Silver Pandas struck in 99.9% fine silver are available in kilo and 150-gram sizes. And Platinum Pandas are available in a 2-Pc. Set are struck in 99.95% fine platinum, in 3-gram and 30-gram sizes. You also have the option of choosing a 2-Pc. Set consists of a 3-gram Platinum Panda and a 150-gram Silver Panda. 

Certified Perfect with Special Designations 

Collectors only want the best of the best for their collections. Coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a top 70 grade representing perfection – even under magnification. What you have here are coins certified by NGC in flawless Proof-70 (PF70) condition. They have also been certified Ultra Cameo (UC), a designation that means these coins possess an intense frosted finish on both sides of the coin, with highly polished fields accenting the raised elements.  

Lastly, each of these Panda Proofs has been certified as a First Day of Issue specimen which means it was received for grading within 24 hours of the coin’s release from the mint. 

Hand-Signed Signature Labels

As mentioned, these coins will arrive sealed in a protective holder with a custom Panda label featuring an authentic, hand-signed signature of Panda designer Ms. Tong Fang. Ms. Tong is renowned within the numismatic community for several of her Chinese commemorative coin designs as well as her 2019, 2021, and 2023 Panda coin designs. It has been rumored that she has also been selected to design Panda coinage released in 2027. 

Limited Availability

Authorized worldwide mintages for each of the Gold, Silver and Platinum Pandas here are very limited, ranging from 30,000 pieces struck in 150 grams of fine silver, to just 1,000 pieces struck in one kilo of 99.9% gold.
